"Tell us more" embeddable form for error pages

It would be cool to be able to give the user a chance to add explanation to the error report. The benefits far exceed easier debugging.
Since in most web apps the user is logged at this phase, his e-mail address could be easily included. This way, the user can be contacted later, and he can be offered an explanation on what went wrong, directions how to proceed or how to resolve a problem. How's that for customer service?

From a technical standpoint, the form could be an embeddable script (remember not to use document.write!) tag, and it would work similarly as the embeddable feedback forms offered by companies like Zendesk or Uservoice. The standard API call to report the error could return a token which could be used with the form to connect the explanation to the issue.

I like this idea a lot. This is far more useful and productive than trying to reproduce the error in the development environment

    Hi Mikael,

This actually sounds like a very interesting idea. I wonder, though, since not all exceptions result in user visable errors, maybe this would be best done as a custom 500.html? I think the idea of returning a token to use for further information reporting is also intriguing. Thanks for the suggestions!

    Cheers,
    Josh

Yeah, that's what I had in mind too, to embed it on a 500 error page. But returning the error token and having an API where you can use the token would really be enough, for a first iteration at least.

Thanks! That is a good suggestion (or, rather, pair of suggestions). I'll add it to the queue and let you know when we have something implemented.
